About the character:
Benjamin Sisko is captain of one of the space ships, that is battling
the borgs after entering our solar system ("The Emissary"
(1/2), the same battle that can be seen in the "Star Trek:
The Next Generation" episode "The Best of Both Worlds"
(74/75)). His space ship is shot to pieces and in the confusion
his wife gets killed, which is a loss he can hardly bear. In the
next two years he tries to find a meaning to it all and gets at
the same time a stronger relationship with his son, Jake.
It is captain Jean-Luc Picard
who offers Benjamin Sisko the job as commander on the space station
Deep Space Nine, which he after a pause for thought accepts. Respect
is what he firstly must achieve on the bajoran space station, where
his first officer is the hot-headed Kira
Nerys. His understanding towards others and the mutual respect
he receives helps him to rebuild the space station, which was build
by Cardassia, the occupying power of Bajor, and subsequent ravaged,
when they left it. His life gets better as Deep Space Nine is rebuilded
and matters are systematized and routines put to work.
From the very beginning he is involuntarily by the believing
bajoran people imposed what they call an Emissary, that is the liaise
between them and the gods in the wormhole. The wormhole, that is
the only stable one, at Deep Space Nine is discovered by Benjamin
Sisko and the space station suddenly gain a new significance for
the sector. Benjamin Sisko can as the Emissary get visions from
the gods in the wormhole and all the time he has to balance this
very unscientific with the scientific, so that both Bajor and the
Federation do not feel neglected.
Second officer on Deep Space Nine is Jadzia
Dax, a woman who actually is his old friend Curzon, a man. Curzon
was the former host which now, after his death, is replaced by Jadzia.
The trill (a parasite) Dax is now one with Jadzia, who still is
the old friend of Benjamin Sisko.
