About the character:
Natasha Yar is security chief aboard the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
She is born in the year 2337 on the colony Turkana IV, where she
grew up in straitened circumstances. Her parents where killed in
a crossfire between to two fighting fractions of the planet, and
as teenager she is assaulted by a gang of rapists - an experience,
that later on teaches her how to defend herself.
Natasha and her 4½ year younger little sister Ishara (the
sister is seen in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode
"Legacy" (80)) are in a few months after their parents
death deserted by their foster parents, and they live a miserable
life in the streets. When Natasha is 15 years old she succeed in
the year 2352 to leave the planet, and it happens about the time,
when the colony breaks its unity with the Federation.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard is
in no doubt, that Natasha Yar is to be his new security chief on
the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, when he sees her rescuing a colonist
out of a mine field. Natasha is good friends with Data
and Worf, but well-liked by all.
In the year 2364 Natasha Yar ends her life on the planet Vagra
II, where she without provokation is killed by the evil being Armus
("Skin of Evil" (23)) to demonstrate his powers. The same
day the leading officers attends in deep grief on a holodeck to
aid the beloved crew member, who through a hologram tells how much
they all ment for her life and self-worth. A kind of will she has
made for the reason of the dangerousness in her line of work as
security chief. Data keeps this hologram in a smaller version in
his quarters.
About the actor:
Denise Crosby had a known grandfather, namely the legendary singer
Bing Crosby (him with the song "White Christmas"), so
it is in the blood to perform.
Before she begins her acting career she is a model in Europe
by three california designers, who tries to market their collections.
But Denise Crosby hates to be a model, so when she returns home
to the USA, she do audition to the movie "Diary of a Teenage
Hitchhiker". She does not get the part, but the guy who casts
the actors, Toni Howard, gets her into a drama school. After that
time she appeares as a subordinate character in a number of movies,
the best known is "48 HRS", the debut movie of Eddie Murphy,
but has mostly appeared in TV series.
Denise Crosby is 30, when she gets the part as Natasha Yar in
"Star Trek: The Next Generation". But as season 1 proceeds
it is decided, that the characters are to develop, and she thinks
that hers cannot. She was always of the opinion, that the reason
why, she got the part as Natasha Yar, was her good looking appearance.
Therefore she lets her character die. Later on she makes guest appearances
on the TV series.
