About the character:
Neelix is of the talaxian race. He does not grow up on the planet
Talax but on its moon Rinax living with his parents and his brothers
and sisters. Especially his sister Alixia he spends some time with
and they both frequently go out and explore the countryside - for
instance some caves in the near by.
When Neelix later on hides himself on his planet Talax escaping
beeing drafted for the army, who in his opinion fights a hopeless
war, all of his family is killed by the Haakonian order.
As USS Voyager arrives the Delta quadrant he is a merchant in
the area and his assistance to captain Kathryn
Janeway in a most difficult deal he is met by an invitation
becoming part of the Voyager crew.
Aboard he straight away appoints himself cook and rearrange some
of the dining room to a kitchen, making the crew not so dependent
on replicated food. After his own wish he is the moral officer on
Voyager, all in all a guide for the crew and with that carries out
diplomatic liaisons to the civilizations they passes by. Neelix
has a relationship going with nurse Kes.
What further describes Neelix is that he is quite a bit eccentric.
About the actor:
The actor Ethan Phillips has made guest appearances in a number
of TV series, but his acting career has most of all been theatres.
He grows up on Long Island and gets an Jesuit education in the city
of New York. He then joins the Boston University, where he pass
a degree in english literature. Finally, he studies on the Cornell
University and gets a university degree in Fine Arts.
Today Ethan Phillips lives with his wife Patricia and their West
Highland terrier in Los Angeles. In his spare time he loves to travel
as a backpacker, climbing mountains and sees himself as amateur
ornithologist and botanist.
