About the character:
Montgomery Scott are born in Scotland in the year 2222. Montgomery
Scott, also known as Scotty, is the able chief engineer on USS Enterprise
NCC-1701. For instance, if he is to do a repair job on the warp
core, he gives an estimated time for the work to be finished but
he actual triples it. The job is then done before the appointed
time and by that achieved the reputation as a "miracle-worker".
And then he makes a virtue of being the one holding the space ship
in tiptop condition. For it is only the Enterprise he cares about.
After several years of service and USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is
to be scrapped he is offered the job as chief engineer on the new
and modern USS Excelsior, which he only accepts for the opportunity
to sabotage it, when he together with James
Tiberius Kirk and the faithful crew hijack Enterprise in the
movie Star Trek III: The Search for
Spock to save a re-generated version of Spock. The rescue mission
is to cost the destruction of Enterprise, but in the end of Star
Trek IV: The Voyage Home they are commissioned a new Enterprise:
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A.
As senior citizen he continues his work aboard the space craft
USS Jenolan, there one day is reported missing. 75 years later the
space craft is found and Montgomery Scott, who is hidden in a transporter
beam and then beamed into a world that since his days has changed
quite a bit (the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Relics"
(130)).
About the actor:
James Doohan is born in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. His
alcoholic father makes life a misery and in the age of 19 he have
had enough. He moves away from home to sign up for the canadian
forces fighting along with the allies during World War 2. James
Doohan achieves the best results when he takes his officers exam
and is made captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery. On actual D
Day he leads his men in battle in which he gets wounded in the leg
and a hand. He later looses his one finger, which is not to be saved.
For the rest of the war he is an observer of pilots.
Returned in Canada James Doohan gets the opportunity to study
as an actor when he is given a two-year grant on Neighborhood Playhouse
in New York City. From 1946 and for the next 8 years he travels
between New York and Canada with appearance in radio shows, TV series,
movies and acting. In that period he earnes the reputation of being
the most hurried canadian actor. Many of his colleagues try their
luck in Hollywood and also James Doohan tries that out. His comprehensiveness
and eminent ability to imitate dialects and distinctiveness of languages
gets him many parts in movies as well as TV series.
The best turning point in James Doohan's career is when a good
friend of his, Gene Roddenberry,
asks him to play the character as chief engineer Montgomery Scott,
who quickly becomes popular among viewers. The first name for the
character is James Doohan's middle name as the part is written specially
for James Doohan.
As "Star Trek" is cancelled after season 3 in 1969 James Doohan
starts to hold speeches at senior high schools in the USA as well
as in Canada and still participates in the numerous Star Trek conventions.
From 1973-1974 he dubbs the voice for his character Montgomery
Scott in the animated TV-series "Star Trek: The Animated Series"
and plays the part in the six motion pictures being shot between
1979 and 1991.
It is clear that James Doohan has not been offered the big roles
in the business, but he is just the perfect example of "Star Trek".
In 1992 he makes a guest appearance in "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
in the episode"Relics" (130). Last performance as Montgomery Scott
is in the movie Star Trek: Generations,
in which he will only appear if he is never to speak with William
Shatner privately.
James Doohan has published his memoirs in which he also states
the dispute between them. But he is not alone - also George
Takei and Nichelle Nichols
has in relation to that published their memoirs.
James Doohan and his wife, Wende, lives in Washington State.
They have two sons, Eric and Thomas, who both is in their early
20's, but in april 2000 Wende gives birth to a afterthought.
James Doohan dies in 2005 at 85. The actor passed away 20 July
2005 in his home in Redmond, Washington. A lingering illness of
Pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease caused the life of the popular
actor.
