About the character:
The most powerful forces of the universe are the Q Continium - a
counsel, where everybody have the name of Q. A Q can turn into whatever
being or thing, it wants to be. Because Q is neither living or dead,
but a supreme being. Therefore the living beings in the universe
do not count for much and can be toyed with at their discretion.
Q finds specially humans unbelievable barbaric, technological
hopelessly behind and not useful to the world, so he challenges
- and it is the first time he shows himself before humans - captain
Jean-Luc Picard to prove, that
humans are not self-effacing ("Encounter at Farpoint"
(1/2) [PILOT]). There are later on several meetings between those
two, because Q has his way of challenging Picard about mankind.
It is as if Q in some way wants to put him in his place. Q's relationship
with Picard is by Data compared
with a childs relationship with a puppy.
About the actor:
The character as Q was a smash hit with the viewers of "Star
Trek: The Next Generation" and makes John de Lancie a popular
actor. Paramount wants him to appear more often in the series, but
the actor will not, afraid he will burn out the character. Then
rather return once in a while. Though John de Lancie mostly has
appeared in "Star Trek: The Next Generation", he has also
played Q in the later TV series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"
and "Star Trek: Voyager".
The actors own son, Keegan de Lancie, has in the "Star Trek:
Voyager" episode "Q2" (165) very appropriate the
character as the son of Q, Q2.
