About the character:
Geordi La Forge (2335) is born blind and weares for that reason a VISOR (Visual Input Sensory Optical Reflector), a sort of glasses, that makes him capable to see, but with a colour spectrum instead. Both Geordi's parents is in Starfleet, so it is only natural for him to walk in their footsteps. Geordi La Forge graduates from the Starfleet Academy in the year 2357. Aboard the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D he starts as a helmsman (season 1) but is later promoted to chief engineer (from the beginning of season 2).

He has big problems finding a partner, as he feels awkwarded in the company of women. But he does his best. Best friends is the android Data and Wesley Crusher. Geordi plays poker together with William Riker, Data, Beverly Crusher, Worf and Deanna Troi.

It is a great loss to Geordi, when the space ship, his mother is the captain of, is reported missing in the episode "Interface" (155).

About the actor:
LeVar Burton is born in Landstuhl in Germany (the former BRD) and is rewarded for his appearance in the mini series "Roots" with an Emmy for his character Kunte Kinte in the age of 20. After this he appeares in a various TV movies but gets his lifes role, as he in 1987 is included in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Here he plays Geordi La Forge with rank of helmsman in season 1, but when some changes on the set is made, his character is promoted to chief engineer from the beginning of season 2.

At one time LeVar Burton is asked if he wants his character, Geordi La Forge, to be able to see, which the actor declines as handicapped as well has to have someone to look up to. And Geordi La Forge is after all doing very well. However, Geordi gets mechanical eyes in the movie Star Trek: First Contact. The name Geordi La Forge is not plucked out of thin air, but was the name of a handicapped boy, who was a big fan of Star Trek.

During the seven years "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is produced, LeVar Burton directs two of the episodes. Since then he directs episodes for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager" with a single guest appearance in the last-mentioned.
