ships counselor Deanna Troi

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Marina Sirtis
29 March 1960 -

ships counselor Deanna Troi
[Season 1 - 7]

About the character:
Deanna Troi is born on the planet Betazed in 2336 as the daughter of Lwaxana Troi and Ian Andrew Troi. Her father is from Earth, so she can only feel not hear, what people are thinking, as betazoids usually can. But her ability to sense feelings, makes her a most valued counselor. She can though communicate nonverbal (telepathy) with her mother.

She studies psychology on Betazed and after that she gets into the Starfleet Academy and gets her degree. During her study on Betazed she falls in love with William Riker from Earth. But he chooses his career in preference to her. When Deanna Troi becomes ships counselor on the brand-new space ship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, they meet again, as he has become first officer aboard. Though that they still have feelings for each other, they are only friends ("Encounter at Farpoint" (1/2)).

Deanna Troi's primary functions is as ships counselor to captain Jean-Luc Picard as his confidante, but otherwise she is psychologist for all aboard. A man as Reginald Barclay is one of her most frequent patients.

When the mother visits the Enterprise Deanna is often embarrassed by her, because she is more carefree of nature and a whole lot eccentric. Also she is annoyingly trying to find a husband for her. In one point Deanna starts dating Worf, but that relationship is terminated when Worf is to serve on Deep Space Nine. Deanna plays poker with William Riker, Data, Geordi La Forge, Beverly Crusher, and Worf.

About the actor:
Marina Sirtis is born in London, England as the daughter of a greek married couple. Her acting career starts with "Guild Hall School of Music and Drama", and after her completion she becomes a member of "Worthing Repertory Theater", where she plays many classic parts.

But in spite of her parts Marina Sirtis has difficulties getting the big parts, since she, how strangely it sounds, is too beautiful. She leaves England, where she in Hollywood gets the international breakthrough with "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the role as Deanna Troi.

Marina Sirtis do not want her english accent to let people know she is british. As she is good at imitating accents the producers leave it to her for choosing the right accent for the character.
