About the character:
Ro Laren is born on the planet Bajor and grows up while the cardassians
have occupied Bajor. Death and torture is everyday life and when
Ro Laren is 7 years old she is forced to watch, while a cardassian
is torturing her father to death. This has perceptibly affected
her psyche and developed a great hatred towards the cardassians.
She is in the resistance movement of Bajor, before she joins
the Starfleet Academy and starts as an ensign, but when she do not
follow an order, she is put in detention. She gets a chance to be
set free and not to be charged, if she will help the Federation
with a sensitive issue (watch the episode "Ensign Ro"
(103)). She comes aboard the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D and after
the conclusion of the matter she stays aboard as ensign thanks to
captain Jean-Luc Picard.
When the academy is ready to take her, she leaves, but returns
to the Enterprise in the episode "Preemptive Strike" (176).
But when she in this episode gets the assignment to infiltrate the
rebellious group called the Marquis - who sees the Feederation and
Cardassia as their enemy - she feels herself attracted towards the
cause, those people fights for, which she finds equal with what
she experienced, when Cardassia had occupied Bajor, and therefore
cannot carry out her orders. She then joins the Marquis. Bajorans
have their last name in front of their first name. That is why Ro
Laren's first name is Laren.
About the actor:
Michelle Forbes joins "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
in the episode "Ensign Ro" (103) as the bajoran Ro Laren.
She is supposed to carry on the character in the TV series "Star
Trek: Deep Space Nine" and be one of the leading parts. But
as Michelle Forbes decides to try make a breakthrough as film actress,
it never turns out that way (instead Nana
Visitor gets the chance, but plays though a another bajoran,
namely Kira Nerys). Michelle Forbes is in the unified whole not
very often appearing in the series and in the 7th season she is
only seen in the episode "Preemptive Strike" (176). What
her movie career is concerned it has not gone as planned. Still
she appeares in TV series and never in a leading part.
