The 24th century. Three years after the battle against the borgs
captain Benjamin Sisko is assigned the command of the cardassian
build space station Tarok Nor, now named Deep Space Nine (DS9),
tugged in the outerrim in the Alpha Quadrant. Together with his
teenage son Jake he moves into the station, which formerly was the
centre for the control of Bajor. Now, as the cardassians have left
the sector it has become the property of Bajor, but they have let
the Federation to take care of the security in the sector. Miles
Edward OBrien leaves the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D along with
his wife Keiko to be chief engineer on the space station. The bajoran
Kira Nerys is Sisko's right hand, the shape shifter Odo is security
chief, Julian Bashir is chief medical officer, the trill with the
parasite Jadzia Dax is second officer, and the ferengi Quark runs
the bar. Together, they are all to try reestablish the space station.
And its importance is momentous as space's only known stable worm
hole is discovered by Sisko and a junction to the far Gamma Quadrant
is a reality. Against the wishes of the UFP they though has to accept
it, when Sisko, who does not want it but undertakes to be the Emissary
- a religious icon which is the link to the Prophets in the worm
whole for the strongly believing bajoran. Sisko wishes to make Bajor
a member of the Federation. WELCOME to Deep Space Nine (DS9).

The incredible popular "Star Trek: The Next Generation"
stops as planned in 1994 after seven seasons and the successor,
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", is launched one and a half
years before. It do not reach close to the same hights of popularity
in the ratings, however enough for the production to continue. "Star
Trek: Deep Space Nine" is a much more gloomy series and not
family friendly, which can be a part of the explanation. There is
also in this series more than ever a connection in the stories,
which can stretch itself over several episodes. They try to make
the series more exciting by adding a little space ship called USS
Defiant NX7-4205 to the space station, but it do not have the big
effect. In the pursuit for higher ratings they put in a new trump
to the start of the fourth season: The klingon Worf, who was a popular
character in "Star Trek: The Next Generation". The ratings
go up, but not to the expected.
