Captain Jean-Luc Picard is relieved of the command on the Enterprise and is replaced by the unpleasant captain Edward Jellico, whose leadership is much different from Picard's. The crew on the Enterprise soon is under a lot of strain. The cardassians is getting ready for war and have grouped their forces along the Federation borders. Picard is send on a secret mission with Beverly Crusher and Worf.

Cardassia has withdrawed from occupied Bajor. Captain Jellico commands Deanna Troi to wear uniform when she is on duty.

"Ship in a Bottle"

A Sherlock Holmes program is acting strangely and when Geordi asks Reginald Barclay find the cause, the holodeck character professor Moriarty ("Elementary, Dear Data" (29)) shows itself. 4 years back captain Picard promised to give the self-aware holodeck character a life outside the holodeck, and now he will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. Only too late Moriarty's (plan) is discovered, which is catastrophic as an exploding star is threatening the Enterprise with destruction.

The USS Enterprise finds Starfleet's little space station near the klingon border abandoned whith exception of a dog and a clue pointing against a recently commited murder. Geordi starts looking through the computer logs of the supposed victim, Aquiel Uhnaris, to find clues, but ends up being in love with this unusual, young woman.

Forced to play a romulan intelligence officer Deanna Troi plays a central role in a detailed defection plan. Meanwhile, the Enterprise is host to a man, who once was ensign in the Starfleet but defected to the romulans, claiming to have a message from ambassador Spock ("Unification" (107/108)).

During a stay on the space station Deep Space Nine Worf is accosted on the promenadedeck by a shopkeeper, who claims, Worf's father, Mogh, is still alive. Worf becomes angry of the chance to this, and by that dishonour the family suffers by letting himself be captured. Meanwhile, Data is astounded by his own behaviour. He has started dreaming about his creator, doctor Noonien Soong.

The Enterprise is abandoned, while it is being cleansed for accumulated radiation. Returned to fetch his saddle from his quarters, Picard discovers, the engineer crew, who take care of the cleansing operation, not is what they appear to be. Meanwhile, unsuspectingly of this Riker, Deanna, Beverly, Geordi and Data attends a reception down on the planet.

When Picard's old archaeology professor comes aboard and invites him to participate in a big mystery, Picard is tempted but says no. When the agitated professor as a result of this leaves the Enterprise in his shuttlecraft, he is attacked. Picard, who feels obligated to follow the professor's trail, finds himself in close competition with the cardassians, the klingons, and the romulans in solving a 4 billion year old mystery of creation.

Beverly Crusher awaits a hearing, that can cost her her career in Starfleet. Guinan let her think back to what has happened: Reyga, a ferengi scientist, who has invented a shield resisting enormous of radiation and high temperatures, is resisted among scientists, and that is why she invites them on board. The test of the shield means the death of a scientist and soon after his unsuccessful experiment, Reyga is found dead. It looks like suicide, but doctor Crusher thinks he was murdered.

Captain Picard gives Worf a leave of absence in the search for his klingon beliefes, which is completed, if he on the holy planet sees the greatest klingon warrior in all times, K'ahless, who for a 1000 years ago gathered the klingon empire. Worf sees him, but he is of flesh and blood. However, in every respect it is K'ahless, who has returned from the dead to claim his empire back.

Worf pressures Gowron to let the cloned Kahless become emperor - though without real power.

The Enterprise has arrived a planet to get data from the computer on the former Federation base. Riker was at the base, when the planet 7 years back was hit by an earthquake and a transporter accident made an identical double of Riker, who survived all the years. This tries to resume his relationship with Deanna and personalities collides, when the two Rikers have to go on a mission together.

Returning to the Enterprise Picard, Data, Geordi and Deanna experience time distortions. Discovering they are in an area of temporal fragments, they carefully navigate their way back to the ship, only to find it engulfed in a battle with a romulan warbird - the entire scene frozen in time.

"Descent" (Part 1)

Responding to a distress call from Ohniaka Three, the Enterprise arrives to find the outpost scientists dead. The away team is then attacked by borg soldiers, who act strangely and seem to focus their attention on Data. Data, who is incapable of feelings, sense rage that makes him kill a borg. A rage, he to Deanna Troi confess was followed by pleasure.

The episode title and the credits is put on screen in the intro scene before the show intro. This is the only episode which that occur.
