During a test flight of the shuttlecraft Delta Flyer Paris and Kim meet a mysteriously pilot, that makes them to enter a race, that is to bring peace between two heterogeneous cultures. But one of the contestants has in mind to sabotage the event to impede peace between the two parties.

The former Maquis members aboard Voyager seem to be victims of a wave of violent attacks, and the rest of the crew are eventually somewhat exposed. As Tuvok takes on the investigation of the attacks, he becomes frustrated about the lack of logical motive. But soon he makes a rather surprising discovery.

The Voyager receives a message from Earth send by Reginald Barclay ("Projections" (19), "Pathfinder" (130) and "Life Line" (144)), who tells the crew about a new plan, that can get them back to known space in the matter of days. Meanwhile, the real Reginald Barclay is unaware, that a double is impersonating him.

Experimenting with the Delta Flyer Seven of Nine, Harry Kim, and the doctor are attacked by a race from the Delta Quadrant, who sees "photonics", which the holografic doctor is made of, as deadly enemies. The doctor seek refuge in Seven of Nine's borg implantations, where he takes over her consciousness. In order not to be revealed he has to convincingly behave like Seven of Nine.

Aboard the USS Voyager they receives a distress call from a hirogen training facility only to find the holografic environment with scattered corpses of hirogens laying about. The holografic technology given to them by captain Janeway ("The Killing Game" (86/87)) is now altered, so the prey has become the hunter. The holograms are aware of their own existence and their fight to escape from their slavery among organic beings, makes it difficult for the doctor to place his loyalty.

Having disabled the Voyager the holograms kidnap B'Elanna Torres in order to extract her knowledge of holo technology. They start repairing Voyager, and captain Janeway learns, that the doctor has betrayed them. Soon B'Elanna is seriously in danger, when the hirogens begin the hunt on their old prey: The holograms.

Disturbances in time rushing through the Voyager hits Chakotay directly and devide the space ship in two different historical time frames. The doctor makes a serum, that is to reverse the process, but Chakotay finds himself alone to move around everywhere. He is now to use his limited time to find a solution with the help of his former crew members from the past, present and future.

Generations ago a klingon warbird left known space and is now meeting the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. The least problem turns out to be convincing the descendants of the klingons, that the Federation and the klingon homeworld now are allied. The biggest problem turns out to be the destruction of the warbird, as 200 klingons now follows an ancient prophecy.

On their own planet the race quarren has brainwashed the crew of the Voyager and made them slave workers without remembrance of their former lifes aboard the USS Voyager. Chakotay, Harry Kim, Neelix, and the doctor are to get them back to the reality before also Voyager, that is orbiting the planet, falls into the hands of the enemy.

Voyager ends up in a rash region, that by some alien beings is used as test facility for weapons. Therefore it requires Seven of Nine's mechanical parts to guide them out of the danger zone, but she is slowly divided by a personal experiment, that can make her dangerous for the crew.

It is not easy to be a parent, even for a Q. Because captain Janeway and the crew were so helpfull, when he was to have a child ("The Q and the Grey" (53)), he now asks "aunt Kathy" to teach his son conscientious virtues. As the USS Voyager get closer and closer to the Alpha Quadrant, a transient communication line to the Starfleet is established, so that the crew can talk with family and friends. The holografic doctor has no one he can talk with, but he has a novel, he himself has written. It is about a holografic doctor, who is stranded in a galaxy on the other side of the universe along with a crew, that keeps him as a virtual slave.

Now, as it has made communication possible between the Alpha- and the Delta Quadrant ("Author, Author" (166)), the Starfleet has the assignment for the crew to collect the probe "Friendship One", launched in the late 21st century. But in the intervening 300 years the probe has become a special importance for a whole people.

Chakotay and Seven of Nine are hit by an energy barrier and has to force-land their shuttlecraft on a planet inhabited by a primitive population. The energy barrier prevents the Voyager to localize the two missing crew members, so they have only one option, which on the other hand will be in conflict with the prime directive of the Starfleet.

It is succeeded by some beings from the Delta Quadrant to kidnap captain Janeway, but the holografic doctor can save her life by indulgently do the kidnappers demands about getting the warp core of the Voyager surrendered. Knowing the crew will not allow the doctor to remove it, he is, without throwing suspicion on himself, appearing as holografic pretends of each crew members.
